(1) A Research Project: Projects will be those that will have the strongest impact on the needs of society.
(2) Science Courses: Courses will focus on scientific theory and methods in water sciences, particularly related to productivity and pollution of aquatic ecosystems.
(3) Emerging Issues Webinar Series: There will be an interactive (two-way) webinar once a month that will focus on emerging issues pertinent to the science, policy and practice of freshwater harmful algal blooms.
(4) International Field School: We will hold 10-day intensive field schools rotated among North America, Europe, Asia and Africa. These will facilitate cross-disciplinary, cross-cultural learning on science and technology with discussions contributing to the project design of trainees’ research and lead to opportunities for collaboration.
(5) International Field Excursion: Given the strong history of our team members in Asian and African lake science, the ABATE field excursion to these areas will give trainees the opportunity to learn the complexities of lakes and lake management in other regions, while conducting participatory research with local communities.
(6) Real World Experiences Through Exchanges and Internships: ABATE trainees will benefit from real world experiences through academic exchanges and professional internships. Each exchange or internship will last up to 4 months.
(7) Knowledge Extension Workshops: We will use knowledge extension workshops to catalyze the science-policy practice dialogue. These extension workshops will bring together trainees and end-users from government and industry.
(8) Annual Showcase and Networking Forum: We will host an annual forum for ABATE team members and the general public. This will be a two-day interactive event where we will present research progress, propose future research steps, describe exchange/internship experiences and present outcomes of knowledge extension workshops.
